Biography

Volga German

Georg Reissig is a Volga German.

Grandfather of Volga German Eva Maria Reissig

The only recording of his birth I have found for him thus far is the birth date in his marriage record. This marriage record does not include his parents' names, which is unusual, but it does include his mother-in-law and father-in-law's names, Michael and Maria Trump Poelstner. I'm not certain why a record would be listed this way unless he was an orphan the Poelstners took in or some situation similar to that. Perhaps his mother was related to Maria Trump Poelstner, such as a sister or a cousin.

Maria Trump Poelstner, Georg Reissig's mother-in-law, had an older sister named Apollonia Trump. This is confirmed by both their marriage records and Maria Poelstner's death record, all which list Michael and Maria Trump as their/her parents. Both sisters were born around the end of the Thirty Years War, a time of great devastation in the area where they lived. Apollonia married Veit Reissner. The spelling of the two last names -- Reissig and Reissner -- are too close to be coincidental. With the exception of Apollonia and Veit's marriage record, I can find no other birth records, death records, or childrens' birth records for them.

It is plausible that Georg Reissig was the son of Apollonia and Veit Reissner and that Apollonia and Maria Trump were sisters. This is supported by the fact that Georg and Maria Reissig named one of their oldest daughter Catharina Apollonia, most likely after his mother. Apollonia was not a common name at that time so it is significant that both his daughter and his wife's aunt (possibly his mother) had the same name. I believe that Apollonia and Veit Reissner were the parents of Georg Reissig and that they may have perished shortly after his birth. After his parents' deaths, Georg Reissig went to live with his uncle and aunt, Michael and Maria Trump Poelstner.

The Reissner spelling of the name is probably one of numerous alternate spellings of a common sounding surname that includes:
• Raisig
• Raissig
• Reisig
• Russig
• Reisich
• Reiseg
• Reissner

There are numerous people with a version of that name in Gailroth, Bavaria, which was the birth place of Maria Trump Poelstner. The town Triftshausen is about 8 miles from Gailroth, making it plausible that Georg could have be born in Triftshausen, as it says in his marriage record, and later lived in Gailroth as an adult.

Apollonia Trump and Veit Reissner were married in Michelbach, A.D.L., Germany. As stated earlier, this is the only record I can find for her and her husband. Out of curiousity, I looked up Michelbach, A.D.L. on a map. What shows up is Michelbach a. d. Lücke, 74599 Wallhausen, Germany. Further research shows it was once a small village with Protestant, Catholic and Jewish residents, first mentioned as Michilinbach in 1245. According to its German Wikipedia page, translated to English:
"The locality comprises about 2.9 km² of the 25.2 km² municipal district of Wallhausen, so Michelbach is by far the smallest of the three suburbs. In the north, it borders on the district of Reubach in the municipality of Rot am See , also in the district of Schwäbisch Hall; In the east to the area of Schnelldorf in the district of Ansbach with the small villages of Leitsweiler and Gailroth just behind the Landesgrenze; To the south and west to the Hengstfelder partmarket of Wallhausen. [emphasis added] [1]
The town of Michelbach A.D.L. merged into Wallhausen, and what remains of its name is the Jewish cemetery, about 8 miles north of town. It wasn't established as a Jewish cemetery until the mid 1800s, but clearly Jewish people lived in the town for hundreds of years prior to that.

Of the Reissigs/Reissens living in the Gailroth-Wallhausen area, there were both Protestants and Catholics. Historically, however, there were several Jewish villages in that area which could have introduced Jewish and Christian residents to each other, some of which may have eventually resulted in intermarriage. Some of those Jewish villages were:
• Hengstfeld
• Crailsheim
• Feuchwangen
• Shopfloch, also the location of the nearest Jewish cemetery until 1850s

This is mentioned because numerous Volga Germans have a fractional percentage of Jewish DNA, but no one can pinpoint where it came from. It's possible that the Reissens, Liebleins, and other families who lived in this area had fractional Jewish DNA themselves, although a larger percentage than their descendants.

It's possible that the inhabitants of this area were historically from Central-Eastern Europe, more specifically from Galicia, a kingdom located in what is now the area of eastern Poland and western Ukraine, which had a significant number of Jewish citizens throughout its history. According to Avotaynu, Inc., a publisher of genealogy products for those with Jewish Heritage, the following names were Jewish surnames in Galicia:
• Reisner
• Reisig
• Postner
• Veit
• Trumpf

The First Crusade in 1096 not only took the lives of Jews in the Holy Land, but also led to the massacre of Jews in several Central European cities. Over the next several hundred years, as their population grew in the cities that once gave them sanctuary, countries began to expel them. During this time, many eventual Germans and German Jews immigrated to Poland, a country that was seen as a land of opportunity. As early as 1124, the city of Kiev, Ukraine, had a significant Jewish community. Jews who did not live in sanctuary towns and cities risked facing bias, being forced to live in ghettos, and/or being expelled from their home countries.

Through the years, as these people migrated west, the spelling of their names may have changed, and some may have converted to a Protestant religion.

I am keeping this information here so I can easily refer back to it. I will probably start a special project for this subject.

Update 19 December 2016

Veit Reissen/Roessen was baptized as a Catholic. If he is the father of Georg Reissig and his wife was Apollonia Trump, then Georg was the product of a Catholic marrying a Protestant. That may have been one reason his parents names were not listed in his marriage record. This does not take into account that one or both of them may have had Jewish ancestry.

Update 10 February 2017

The "an der Lueck" after Michelbach means "on the gap." It was added to differentiate the town from other Michelbachs in Germany. Jewish residents have lived in Michelbach an der Lueck since the 16th century. [2]

Below is the Wikipedia-translated version of a description of Michelbach an der Lueck.
"Emperor Ferdinand II surrendered the estate Michelbach 1631 to Count Georg Ludwig to Schwarzenberg. In the Thirty Years' War the place was almost completely destroyed: in 1639 the church and numerous houses, in 1645 the castle and the remaining houses. The place was rebuilt only in the 18th century; The castle was rebuilt in 1709 and the newly built Protestant church was consecrated in 1726. As plans for the use of the [Protestant] church as a simultaneous [Catholic] church could not be realized, there was for a long time a Catholic chapel for the Catholic faithful, who mostly came from the ranks of the custodians of the Counts of Schwarzenberg." [3] "The Jewish community in Michelbach an der Lücke dates to the 16th century. Most of its residences as well as the synagogue, erected in 1756-57 and renovated in 1844, were located on what is still called the "Judengasse" (Jew Alley). The synagogue was not destroyed in 1938, but its interior appointements [sic] were lost when the building was put to other uses. Restored in 1983-84 the structure now serves as a memorial and museum dedicated to the Jews who once lived in Franconia. The Michelbach community initially buried its dead in Schopfloch, Bavaria, but, after 1840, in its own burial ground, still preserved northwest of the village. Neighbouring Hengstfeld lacks any special elements reminiscent of the Jewish presence except for former Jewish residences. The synagogue was closed around 1895 and ultimately dismantled after most Jewish inhabitants had left." [4]

In The Immigration of German Colonists to Denmark and Their Subsequent Emigration to Russia in the Years 1759-1766, it clearly states that Georg's son Johann Georg Raisig/Reisig was an Evangelical Lutheran from Schwaben, or the Duchy of Swabia, which at the time included the village of Gailroth.

Note: If Georg Reissig was taken in and raised by his Aunt Maria Trump and Uncle Micheal Poelstner, he was first cousins with all their children. If he married their daughter Maria, as stated in marriage records, then he married his cousin. This is just a theory for now; I continue to research these people and will update when I have new information.

Biography

Volga German Ancestor

His surname is spelled one way on his birth record, and another way on his marriage record. His son's surname is spelled a third way.
• Roessner -- birth record spelling
• Reissen -- marriage record spelling
• Reissig -- son's marriage record spelling

They all refer to the same name. In the spelling on his birth record, the "oe" is probably spelled out instead of using an umlaut over the "o": Roessner. I don't have an umlaut key on my keyboard or I would type it out properly. The sound of an "o" with an umlaut can sound like like the "ei" in Reissen and Reissig. The different endings probably represent how they thought their surname was spelled or a clerical error when taking the census. His Volga German descendants used the spelling "Reissig" or "Reisig."

His birth record says he came from a Catholic family. His wife's family was Protestant. There may have been a rift between their families because of the marriage between faiths. Beyond his birth and marriage records, there are no other records for him, nor for his wife, including records for other children or death records for anywhere in Europe or the world, for that matter. They may have perished or been banished because of the interfaith marriage. Whatever happened, their son does not have a documented birth record. Georg Reissig's marriage record omits the names of his parents. The marriage record also reveals that he married his maternal cousin. Those are several possible reasons why the names of his parents were kept secret.

Biography

I cannot locate a birth record for him; probably pre-1500 or early 1600 record. He and his wife are named on his children's birth records which are listed below.

Note: The name Hannss was often a nickname for Johann. A child may have been officially named Johann at birth, but later in life, on his marriage record or on the birth record of his children, he may have used the nickname or shorter version Hannss. It appears that's what happened on Hannss Roessner's marriage record: His name is listed as Johann.

His birth information is listed here because it includes the names of his wife Maria's parents. The names of his parents are not listed. I'm not certain why a record would be listed this way unless he was an orphan the Poelstners took in or something situation similar to that. Perhaps his mother was related to Maria Trump Poelstner, such as a sister or a cousin. His own parents are specifically not listed in this record, but as an adult, he appears to have kept his family name Reissig/Reisig.

Biography

Volga German Ancestor

Witzmannsweiler, Michelfeld, Germany is about 34 miles from Gailroth, located northwest of Stuttgart.

Marriage Record
• Name Johann Georg Reissig
• Birthplace Gailroth, Bayern, Germany
• Spouse's Name Susanna Ursula Oberndoerfer
• Spouse's Birthplace Witzmannsweiler, Wuerttemberg, Germany
• Event Date 10 Jun 1732
• Event Place Michelbach A.D.L., Wuerttemberg, Germany
• Father's Name Georg Reissig
• Mother's Name ... ...
• Spouse's Father's Name Johann Thomas Oberndoerfer
• Spouse's Mother's Name ... ...
• Marital Status Single
• Spouse's Marital Status Single

Research Notes

In searching for clues about her origin, I found a birth record that may belong to her father, Johann Thomas Oberndoerffer.
• Name Hanß Thomas Oberdorff
• Gender Male
• Christening Date 29 Apr 1675
• Christening Place Lindelbach, Baden, Germany
• Father's Name Hanß Oberdorff

Lindelbach is only about 50 miles from Gailroth, where some of Susanna Ursula Oberndoerfer's husband's family members were born, and about 120 miles from Witzmannsweiler.

There is a death record for Hanß Oberdorff's wife, Ursula, in 1706. Because of the more unusual name, Ursula, matches Susanna Ursula Oberndoerfer's middle name, this could point to a match for her grandparents.
• Name Ursula ...
• Gender Female
• Death Date 21 Sep 1706
• Death Place Leitsweiler, Bayern, Germany
• Age 46
• Birth Date 1660
• Marital Status Married
• Spouse's Name Hanss Oberndoerfer

There is a death record for a Johann Thomas Oberdorffs who was buried in Lindelbach, but it lists his father's name as Andreae Oberdorffs. This is probably not the person we are looking for because it would mean that he lived to be 102, which would be highly unusual for that time period, especially given the Thirty Years War and famine that plagued that area of Germany. That said, I believe that Andreae Oberdorffs is probably a brother to the Johann Thomas Oberndoerfer who is Susanna Ursula's father.
• Name Johann Thomas
• Gender Male
• Burial Date 03 Mar 1767
• Burial Place Lindelbach, Baden, Germany
• Father's Name Andreæ Oberdorffs
